Field Sampling & Plan Preparation

TechLaw’s diverse group of soil scientists, geologists, hydrogeologists, chemists, biologists, environmental scientists, toxicologists, risk assessors, and other professionals provide field sampling and analysis capabilities, as well as related plan preparation. Our expertise includes, but is not limited to, multi-media sample collection, direct push technology, on- and off-site analytical capabilities, GIS and GPS technology, and rapid turn-around sampling and analysis. We have supported EPA, as well as state and local regulatory agencies with our sampling and plan preparation skills. We have also provided technical assistance to local initiatives and agencies.

Projects

BIF Multimedia Sampling and Analysis Initiative
TechLaw conducted data collection and analysis of surface soil and plant and animal tissue data to be used as part of an overall weight of evidence in a comprehensive human health risk assessment conducted by the EPA. The tissue data were to be assessed to determine if potential compounds of concern were being introduced into the human food chain.
Phase II Site Assessment
While coordinating a Phase II Assessment for a California site, TechLaw collected subsurface soil and groundwater samples using a Strataprobe Direct Push Technology rig. We analyzed samples on-site by a mobile laboratory for VOCs, semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), and pesticides/PCBs. Off-site laboratories were used to analyze for metals and nitrates. TechLaw prepared a field sampling plan and performed oversight during sample collection activities.
Expedited Sampling Project
In support of a federal agency enforcement case, with only one-week’s notice, TechLaw prepared for a sampling event at the foundry facility and at a landfill used by the foundry for disposal. We collected samples at these locations during a 2½-day sampling event, and logged and collected samples from five borings advanced into the municipal landfill. Samples were analyzed for metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Federal Facility, Washington, D.C.
We conduct independent sampling, split sampling, and oversight of intrusive actions at suspected Chemical Warfare Materiel locations. TechLaw also provides technical review of work plans, and public meeting support.
Turbine Manufacturer, Massachusetts
TechLaw staff collected more than 400 sediment samples, and coordinated with state regulators to update a GIS database with Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates and analytical data.

Former DoD Powder Storage Facility
TechLaw performed an expanded site inspection providing information required to support preparation of a Hazard Ranking System (HRS) package. The site assessment determined the adequacy of previous work by addressing immediate and potential threats posed to human health and the environment. The investigation phases and field activities involved collecting more than 2,000 soil, sediment, groundwater, and residential drinking water samples using two direct push technology rigs. Radiation field screening was performed using isotopic scanners. Radiation samples were collected from subsurface soils near select storage igloos used during the Manhattan Project. We coordinated a Phase I groundwater tracing investigation using fluorescent dyes to determine the interconnection between surface water and groundwater, and the direction of groundwater flow. We conducted data reviews for the sampling efforts, including the internal validation and evaluation of analytical data, and provided data management services for the resulting data by compiling summary spreadsheets to assist the client.
