Major Facility Now ISO 14001:2004 Conforming

December, 2005

We congratulate Firmenich, a major chemical research and
production facility in Port Newark, New Jersey. It was just
recommended for registration to the ISO 14001:2004 Standard.
As a leading global company developing and producing flavors,
fragrances, and aroma chemicals, Firmenich sought out TechLaw for support in its quest for ISO 14001:2004 certification. Already known for its strong positions on social and environmental responsibility, Firmenich asked TechLaw to analyze its environmental management system (EMS) and then work with its management and staff to improve its EMS, increase awareness, and train its internal auditor teams. This represents another in an unbroken string of successes for the TechLaw EMS team.

ISO 14001:2004 is a major upgrade since the last 1996 version. ISO 14001 is International Organization for Standardization (ISO). 14001 helps organizations meet their environmental challenges. The vast majority of ISO standards are highly specific to a particular product, material, or process. However, the standards that have earned the ISO 14000 (and soon 14001) a worldwide reputation known as "generic management system standards." The transition period extends from November 15, 2004, when ISO published the revised standard, to May 15, 2006. Beyond that date, only certificates to ISO 14001:2004 will be recognized by members of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

TechLaw, Inc. has summarized the changes that are taking place in the global standard for EMS, ISO 14001:2004. TechLaw, not only works with each client to achieve an EMS that meets generally accepted criteria (ISO 14001, EMAS, or by governmental regulatory agencies), but is dedicated in helping clients create or enhance each EMS so that its value is seen by their customers and stakeholders, both internal and external. TechLaw’s EMS Toolkit© provides a proven approach to guiding clients along the path to a fully functional EMS. When used for conforming to the ISO 14001 Standard, it lays the documentary foundation for registrar approval.

TechLaw is in regular contact with a number of U.S. registrars for the ISO 14001 Standard. The summary chart is an element-by-element review of the major changes in ISO 14001:2004 from the 1996 version. Even though it does not detail every single change, it helps to determine the appropriate EMS for your organization. We caution that these comments must be read in the context of the standard for a complete understanding of the requirement. The chart is not intended to be the sole basis for determining whether to make any changes to your EMS.

TechLaw Awarded MMRP Contract

September, 2005

Sacramento, TechLaw was awarded a $1.48M contract to continue its Military Munitions Response Program work for the Army Corps of Engineers - Sacramento District in support of the Army Environmental Center. The contract has been awarded using end-of-year FY05 funds and sets the pace for what TechLaw anticipates to be a first quarter 06 award of additional sites. This contract also introduces TechLaw to developing Historic Records Reviews for 5 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) installations that it hopes will lead to more work in this arena.

Credit is given to the outstanding work that TechLaw's Denver and Sacramento staff has been performing, which enabled the Corps "to make this [DoD contract] happen" as one TechLaw official put it.

TechLaw's Hurricane Relief Efforts

September, 2005

Gulf Coast—TechLaw is proud to support the humanitarian and infrastructure relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. TechLaw staff members are in Louisiana assisting in search and rescue operations, and conducting hazard assessments at more than 2,500 facilities throughout the region to determine the potential release of hazardous materials. TechLaw is also supporting water sampling and providing geographic information system (GIS) support for mapping assessment and sampling locations.

TechLaw Opens Wheeling Office

July, 2005

Wheeling, WV—TechLaw just opened its new office in Wheeling, fulfilling some of the recently-won START Region 3 contract commitments.

As an EPA remediation and emergency response prime contractor, TechLaw has two new vans enabling them to respond quickly and promptly. So if you see our vans out there in your rear-view mirror, you'll know what to do!

What Amounts to an EPA Hat Trick in June

June 2005

TechLaw not only won the START 3 contract (see TechLaw STARTs Up...Again) in June, but also won two more EPA contracts:
• Regional Oversight Contract
  (ROC) Region 2
• ROC Region 4

These contracts provide TechLaw with additional opportunities to provide EPA CERLCA remediation support at Federal Facilities, FUDS and BRAC sites. With the addition of these two new contracts, TechLaw now provides Federal Facility remediation support in seven of the ten EPA regions across the country. Together, these two ROC contracts are worth approximately $15 million over the next seven years.

TechLaw Wins With the DoD

June 22, 2005

Denver, CO—TechLaw was awarded over a half-million dollars in new work for the DoD, Wednesday, for their Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP). TechLaw’s Sacramento and Denver offices jointly presented the TechLaw proposal for additional work in Alaska, West Point, and at Camp Beale, CA. The Alaska USACE remarked that TechLaw, blew away the competition.

In a related story, TechLaw also won a small contract for the U.S. Air Force MMRP, which makes TechLaw an official AF MMRP contractor! It was the Shaw AFB/TechLaw Team that won this work.

TechLaw STARTs Up . . . Again

June, 2005

Chantilly, Va.—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded TechLaw, Inc., a 5-year, $16 million regional contract to provide technical support under the EPA's Superfund program.

This win is significant because it truly establishes TechLaw as an EPA remediation and emergency response prime contractor of the highest caliber,  said Matt Low, President of TechLaw.  Our people look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to assist the EPA in their vital work.

TechLaw was selected in a competitive bid process to provide site assessment activities and response, prevention and preparedness activities under the Superfund Technical Assistance and Response Team (START) contract for the western portion of EPA Region 3—West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western Virginia. This support includes gathering and analyzing technical information, preparing technical reports on oil and hazardous substance investigation and technical support for cleanup efforts.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Superfund program. Growing public concern over uncontrolled and abandoned hazardous waste sites prompted Congress to establish Superfund in 1980 to locate, investigate, and cleanup the worst sites nationwide. The EPA administers the program in cooperation with individual states and tribal governments.

TechLaw is a longtime partner with EPA under several agency programs, in addition to Superfund. This most recent contract win was the result of a strategic plan initiated five years ago through TechLaw’s START Region 6 and Region 8 subcontracts, according to Low.

TechLaw Keeps On

March, 2005

TechLaw, continues to expand. They became an authorized contractor for the City of Dallas, and continue to work for the Washington State Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee (JLARC) project. Their insurance analysis work moved beyond Region 1 into Illinois and Colorado. They perform post-closure financial analysis for Region 6, and now, EPA is showing considerable interest in TechLaw’s financial assurance capabilities as a result of a high-priority initiative from headquarters. Meanwhile, the San Francisco office was awarded a contract to serve as Altamont Landfill community monitor. Additionally, TechLaw is performing EMS services for two chemical manufacturing companies while slated to start an EMS training program in Region 4.

In TechLaw’s litigation support and information management division, current contacts led directly to a considerable litigation support project for a major joint defense group. TechLaw received commitments to do more expansive work in San Francisco, for which a senior project manager was hired to manage the work and TechLaw’s San Francisco operation. In Boston, significant work was gained with a major insurance firm. Meanwhile, TechLaw’s e-discovery portion continues to grow, and additional activity on a major e-discovery project for a major automobile manufacturing company. Interest also continues to increase in TechLaw’s native review platform and their H5 partnership, which has already led the DOJ Anti-Trust Division to issue TechLaw a new task order.

State Directors Meeting a Success

February, 2005

Region 4, The State Directors Meeting/P2 Region Round Table was held at the Renaissance Charleston Hotel in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina, February 1–3, 2005. TechLaw assisted EPA Region 4 by making hotel arrangements, creating and maintaining a meeting-specific Web site, and designing posters, banners, and nametags. TechLaw also provided on-site support during the 3-day activities. Directors from the various state hazardous waste and pollution prevention divisions within EPA Region 4 and EPA personnel attended the meeting.
