Community Involvement in Colorado

February 2008  TechLaw donated three $100 scholarships to students of Colorado's Hoff Elementary School as part of its Community Involvement Program.

The scholarships helped pay for entry fees and transportation costs to the Regional Science Fair competition held in Greeley, Colorado.

TechLaw also purchased four student microscopes, petri dishes, agar, and miscellaneous supplies for the school’s Science Department.

In addition, a local TechLaw staff member—Steve Auer—volunteered his time to judge the annual science fairs at the Hoff Elementary and Cardinal Charter schools—which are near TechLaw’s office in Golden, Colorado.

Program Offers Rewards

January 2008  Eliana Theodorou, a young lady recognized by a local group based on her grass roots organizing skills related to environmental causes within her community, was awarded a laptop by TechLaw’s New York office as part of TechLaw’s Community Involvement Program that allocates annual funding to each regional office for use toward one or more community projects each year.

Ms. Theodorou was the Young Women Achiever for Excellence in Environmental Activism at the Annual “Women Achievers Against the Odds”Awards Breakfast hosted by the Long Island Fund for Women & Girls in November of 2007. The fund, which promotes programs that improve the lives of women and girls, highlights and addresses community and women’s issues and develops philanthropy.

Ms. Theodorou, a high school senior, founded her school’s environmental club and also assisted her community in establishing a household materials recycling program. She was instrumental in raising community awareness concerning local waterfront environmental issues.

Ms. Theodorou was formally recognized at the Awards breakfast, which was attended by more than 600 business, university and community leaders from throughout the New York metropolitan area.

The intent of TechLaw’s Community Involvement Program is to provide support for projects related to TechLaw’s role in the community, in addition to fostering and solidifying local relationships. Individual offices can combine their stipends for greater impact or to fund larger projects, as well as to build inter-office relationships. TechLaw hopes this program will continue to strengthen relationships within the communities in which our personnel live and work, with increased benefit to the communities.

On January 3, 2008, TechLaw turned 25 with a celebration of a quarter-century of accomplishments and progress. Just a glimpse into TechLaw’s history shows our accomplishments and the changes that have occurred since 1980, when TechLaw began as a 10-person division of a company called INTERA, which became the first EPA Contractor Evidence Audit Team (CEAT) contractor.

Under this contract, TechLaw ensured that enforcement support work by other EPA contractors was performed with due regard for the legal requirements of technical evidence.

TechLaw was founded by individuals who led the design and implementation of enforcement and compliance programs during the 1970s in the then newly formed EPA. They found that resolution of complex environmental cases typically involved an understanding of technical disciplines, application of legal and regulatory principles, and use of technology to store, analyze, distill, and synthesize large amounts of data. The concept for TechLaw grew out of their recognition that technology (tech)and legal support (law) were interrelated, and that their experience would be valuable to clients faced with challenges at this complex technical-legal juncture. TechLaw has developed and expanded over time to respond to client needs.
