TechLaw Joins with Northwest Green Chemistry, Washington State Dept. of Ecology, at US EPA Awards Ceremony

WASHINGTON, DC (June 22, 2015) — WASHINGTON, DC (June 22, 2015) TechLaw, Inc., the support operations manager of Northwest Green Chemistry (NGC), joined with NGC and the Washington State Department of Ecology today at US EPA headquarters, where the group and the agency received a joint national environmental award.

EPA Assistant Administrator Jim Jones presented NGC and Ecology with one of 21 "Safer Choice Partner of the Year" awards—the first time EPA has handed out the distinctions. NGC and Ecology were cited as a leading Program Supporter of EPA Safer Choice. The award was accepted by Ken Zarker, Manager of the Pollution Prevention & Regulatory Assistance Section at Ecology, and a chief adviser to NGC.

"TechLaw is proud to be associated with NGC and Ecology and the great work they're doing to improve the environment in the Pacific Northwest," said Patricia Derocher, President of TechLaw, Inc. "It's certainly an honor to be recognized by EPA, and I know there will be many important things coming from NGC in the years ahead."

Joining NGC and Ecology at the awards was TechLaw Vice President Judy Manley. TechLaw has worked with NGC since its founding in 2013, providing operations and program support for the nonprofit organization. NGC focuses on working with businesses, government and the public to promote the use of safer chemicals to benefit the environment.

"In just two years, we've made great strides in helping businesses and the public in the Pacific Northwest and beyond make safer choices through green chemistry and better environmental practices," said Dr. Lauren Heine, Chairwoman of the NGC Advisory Board. "We look forward to continuing that work."

EPA Safer Choice—known before this year as Design for the Environment—is a program that advocates the design, manufacture, promotion and use of products with ingredients that have been evaluated by EPA scientists to ensure they are safe for humans and the environments. Products that meet EPA's stringent requirements are labeled for the public, so that when people use Safer Choice products, they are protecting their families and the environment by making safer chemical choices. Currently, the Safer Choice Program has nearly 500 formulator-manufacturer partners who make more than 2,000 products for retail and institutional customers.

NGC and Ecology were cited by EPA for working to advance safer chemistry and products through legislative and other activities, participating in several Safer Choice-related initiatives, and promoting use of Safer Choice products through outreach, media campaigns, and the Safer Chemistry challenge.

Northwest Green Chemistry was established in 2013 with seed funding from an EPA National Estuary Program grant and the Bullitt Foundation of Seattle. NGC seeks to enhance human and environmental health, while also fostering innovation and economic opportunities through sustainable green chemistry and engineering solutions.

Based in Seattle, NGC is supported by the Washington Department of Ecology and led by an Advisory Council comprised of representatives from industry, academic, government, non-governmental organizations, and tribal communities. To learn more about the NGC and green chemistry, visit
